Hock Lian Huat Foodstuff industry is a family owned business manufacturing traditional Chinese foodstuffs commonly known in Singapore as Ngoh Hiang Hae Biah. It is directly translated as five spice prawn crackers named after the two famous items five spice meat roll and crispy prawn cracker.
Ngoh Hiang Hae Biah is a popular Chinese hawker food in Singapore. It basically comprises of several types of items; Ngoh Hiang (Five Spice Meat Roll), Prawn Crackers, Chinese Sausage, meat balls, meat rolls, vegetable rolls, fish or seafood rolls prawn crackers etc. served with special sweet sauce and chilli sauce.
The business is now into its 3rd generation, which was started by the grandfather back in 1928. It was then supplying 3 products to about 10 hawker stalls.
In 1964, his youngest son, Tan Ah Lay took over the business and named it after the 3 sons “Hock Lian Huat”. With the entrepreneur spirit and business acumen of Mr Tan, coupled with the support of the family (the whole family works in the business), the business flourished with a big extension of product range and customers size
In 2000, Tan Ah Lay assume a consulting role in the business and handed over the management of the company to his son, Tan Yew Liang. The company now supplies to more than 100 hawker stalls at coffee shops, hawker centres, food court, and night bazaars with a total range of 33 products.
With more than 20 years of working experience in Hock Lian Huat, Tan Yew Liang is currently spearheading the company towards a new phase. This includes upgrading of the facilities, services, food quality and marketing. This will be the foundation of the new business expansion plan which encompass:
strengthening the core of existing market and increasing its market share
expanding into untapped markets like restaurants, supermarket, export etc.
Today, Hock Lian Huat is the oldest running pioneer and leading manufacturer/supplier of Ngoh Hiang in Singapore.
